LIFE IS FULL OF SURPRISES...
Hello, my name is Rebecca. I was born in Bella Vista, a district of the Republic of Panama on December 6, 1977. For those of you uncertain of the location, Panama is located in Central America and it's bordered by the Caribbean Sea on the North, Colombia on the East, the Pacific Ocean on the South and Costa Rica on the West. Panama it's a paradise all in it's own and the temperature is one hundred percent tropical.
The climate is warm and rainy on the coast and mild and rainy in the highlands. The average temperature is 29 degrees centigrade (84F) on the coastline and 18 degrees centigrade (64F) in the highlands. Panama only has two seasons: The rainy one, commonly known as winter, which goes from May through December, and the dry one also known as summer, from January through April.
For those who seek close contact with the rainforest, Panama is the ideal country! It's the only Latin American Capital surrounded by rainforest less than ten minutes away from it's center. Our rainforest have the richest variety of flora and fauna around the world, where more than ten thousand species of plants and one thousand species of bird live together.
Spanish is our official language however many Panamanians like myself speak English fluently. One of the festive highlights each year is Carnival, celebrated throughout the country in the month of February. Panama is predominantly Catholic but you will also find other denominations.
I grew up with a Catholic background just like many of the girls in my country, which for me meant doing and saying things the proper way and not allowing any of the
unacceptable behaviors in. The normal things teenagers like to do, such as going to parties, hanging out with their friends, etc., these were things I wanted to do but was not allowed too because it was either wrong or labeled as taboo by my family. Nevertheless, I was a happy girl with many dreams and ambitions. One of the things I dreamt the most about was becoming a Model. I had always been drawn to the world of fashion and the glamorous life behind it. I knew it was not going to be an easy task due to my family's believes and the many restrictions I had.
I attended a private high school dedicated to teaching the essentials of business administration. As I got older things began to change, I turned into a tall, skinny young lady with no shape or balance whatsoever. I spent half of my time studying and the other half I spent it organizing school events. I was constantly reading and because of this learning new things. Yes, you could say that I was the typical high school geek. For me going to school and taking a test was a lot more fun than cutting classes and hanging out at the mall with my friends. I was a straight (A) student all through high school, and stayed heavily involved in everything and anything that had to do with school.
I graduated high school in 1994. Shortly after that I joined Kodak Panama Limited an affiliate of Eastman Kodak. Being only 18, I entered the company as a Retail/Marketing Manager Assistant. I was the youngest employee in the department, yet I showed outstanding professionalism, determination and passion for my job. I was one of the few who spoke English and Spanish fluently and because of this ability; I was later attending trade shows and promotional expos as a bilingual product demonstrator for Kodak. This is how I was introduced to the world of modeling. I later found myself doing some work of my own such as prints and promotional with some of the local photographers in the area.
Still trying to figure out a career, I attended college part-time studying psychology while working full time and doing some modeling on the side to help pay for my tuition expenses. It was not as easy as I thought it would be. With the pressure of my family staring me in every direction known to man, their wishes became evident to me. Modeling was not going to be something they would ever approve. So I left it behind and devoted myself fully to my job and school.
After a year an a half of working and going school, financially things became more of a struggle with every passing day even with the help of my family, which wasn't much. The economy in Panama was very low, as well as the pay. The average Panamanian family was making less than six thousand dollars a year approximately, with both husband and wife working outside of the home. Needless to say, after two years of college I decided to put it on hold. That was a big mistake and I learned the hard way.
Panama's economy kept on shrinking and life became even more over bearing. I had to do something. This is when I decided to make a drastic change. I moved to the United States in 1998 working very hard for several years, taking odd jobs here and there to help make ends meet. The idea or dream of modeling was no longer there.
Many years have past since then, and after meeting some of my personal goals; I am ready to bring my childhood dream alive... Modeling
Today, I am proud to say that I am a wife, a friend and a mother of two. My husband and my children are my daily dose of happiness and inspiration. Now, I do modeling part time and I am currently working in the Human Resources field, where I serve as the Human Resources Administrator for a Manufacturing Company. This is something I truly enjoy. My job its filled with challenges, obstacles, research and many other responsibilities, yet it allows me to be creative and proactive.
One of the things I'm very thankful for is being able to communicate with people in two different languages. This has opened my horizons and giving me the opportunity to be exposed and experienced different cultures, not to mention all the interesting people I have met along the way.
Albert Einstein once said that life is only 90 percent of what happens to you, the other 10 percent is how you react to it, and this is very true. I am a firm believer that with a positive attitude, determination, and a little bit of hope anything is possible.
You create your own destiny- Do not let your dreams die without giving it your best shot - Take charge of your life and believe in yourself-
Remember, The sky is your limit - You just have to believe in yourself.
